Earlier this year, Dakota West, a resident of Kansas, embarked on a mission to reclaim her female driver’s license. Her determination stemmed from the necessity to have documents that accurately represent her identity.

West’s valid driver’s license, reflecting her female identity, was short-lived. In late February, she received a letter from the state demanding its return just five months after issuance. This abrupt change followed the legislative decision mandating all state-issued licenses to display the birth-assigned sex.
