The earliest Medal of Honor film adaptation was the recounting of the Andrews’ Raiders. This Union Army raid was dramatized in the 1956 film The Great Locomotive Chase. Medal of Honor recipient Audie Murphy’s heroism was captured on-screen in To Hell and Back (1955), showcasing his remarkable defense against German forces in 1945 and leading to a career in over 40 additional films.

In recent cinema, Ridley Scott’s Black Hawk Down (2001) revisits the 1993 incident in Mogadishu, depicting Delta Force snipers Gary Gordon and Randy Shughart’s last stand to protect a downed helicopter pilot. This film tells a compelling true story of heroism under duress.

Not all films conform to the typical war narrative mold. Hacksaw Ridge (2016) features Desmond Doss, a conscientious objector and medic who saved 75 soldiers during the Battle of Okinawa. This story, featuring Andrew Garfield, challenges traditional genre elements and received two Academy Awards.
