In 1979, Hall of Fame linebacker Jack Lambert famously suggested that putting dresses on quarterbacks might be an apt response to the NFL’s enhanced rules on roughing the passer. This line highlights his frustration with new regulations back then. If he saw the current changes, including the myriad of rules designed to shield quarterbacks, Lambert might have even more to say. Yet, injuries remain a concern.
As Week 4 approaches, injuries affect six starting quarterbacks. Notably, Chicago Bears quarterback Caleb Williams was assisted off the field following an injury against the Minnesota Vikings during the latter half of their game at Soldier Field on September 20, 2026.
“More rule changes aren’t the solution,” remarked Pro Football Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Fouts, addressing quarterback injuries. “It’s a violent game with exceptional defenders. Enhanced athletic ability among defenders often surpasses that of offensive linemen. Nowadays, quarterbacks face complex blitz strategies from various positions.”
Players are larger, stronger, and faster compared to the past. Despite the NFL’s efforts to safeguard quarterbacks through rule modifications, the sport’s inherent physicality causes injuries. New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart, who suffered a meniscus injury, remains the only player whose season ends prematurely. Other quarterbacks have returned or will return soon, including Sam Darnold, Kyler Murray, Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, and Baker Mayfield.
Teams like the Seattle Seahawks, Washington Commanders, Chicago Bears, Giants, and Minnesota Vikings managed victories with backup quarterbacks. However, their offensive performance suffered. As noted by Dan Fouts, teams must rely on their offensive lines to protect quarterbacks. The risk of a significant setback increases if the No. 2 or No. 3 quarterbacks struggle under pressure.
Fouts enjoyed a successful career at Oregon before the San Diego Chargers selected him in the third round of the 1973 NFL Draft. Over 15 seasons, he built a legacy that earned him a Hall of Fame induction in 1993.
