Recently, rapper Macklemore faced a ban from opening for Ed Sheeran at Gillette Stadium due to his pro-Palestinian remarks. In a related incident, musician Zach Bryan wore a “Free Palestine” shirt during his concert at the stadium. Bryan’s concert was the first of two planned performances at Gillette, with the second concert scheduled for Saturday night.
The shirt displayed by Bryan included the phrases “Free Palestine” and “An appeal to heaven,” accompanied by a pine tree logo. Some of Bryan’s band members wore shirts conveying similar messages.
The phrase “An appeal to heaven” dates back to the Revolutionary War. It was featured on the official maritime flag of Massachusetts until 1971. It represented the belief that divine intervention would help the colonists overcome tyranny.
Efforts to reach Gillette Stadium for a comment have so far been unreturned.
Earlier, Macklemore was excluded from the “Loop” tour with Ed Sheeran after expressing support for Palestine during a concert in New Jersey. Despite being scheduled to perform at Gillette Stadium, Robert Kraft, owner of both the New England Patriots and the stadium, intervened. He contacted Ed Sheeran to ensure Macklemore would not perform. Kraft justified the decision by citing “a broader history of antisemitic rhetoric and imagery” that could offend the Jewish community.
Macklemore responded on Instagram, acknowledging the reality of antisemitism. He argued that expressing criticism of Israel and advocating for “Free Palestine” should not be equated with antisemitic expressions. In solidarity with Macklemore, other supporting acts dropped out of Sheeran’s tour.
Additionally, Macklemore committed to donating $1 million to aid Palestinians, urging Kraft to match this donation. Kraft had mentioned that he and Sheeran chatted about matching the pop star’s $2 million pledge.
Sheeran’s concerts scheduled for September 25 and 26 at Gillette Stadium were postponed due to severe weather conditions in the area.
