Paint is peeling from Washington’s Reflecting Pool following recent renovations directed by President Donald Trump. He alleges that vandalism is to blame. In a social media post on Friday night, Trump said, “We’ve had some real problems with vandalism at the beautiful Reflecting Pool. Just like three days ago, they destroyed the grass outside of the Pool, they’ve also done everything possible to hurt the inside surface that was just installed.” His claims lack supporting details.
Agencies like the U.S. Park Police, National Park Service, and Interior Department, responsible for law enforcement and maintenance on the National Mall, have not commented on the situation. The paint has peeled significantly from the bottom of the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following renovations ordered by Trump. The directive was to paint the pool blue ahead of the 250th anniversary of U.S. independence, celebrated in Washington, D.C., on June 19, 2026. This issue was documented by Aaron Schwartz of Reuters.
The Washington Post indicated that Park Police officers apprehended someone on Friday for allegedly peeling paint from the pool. However, this does not account for the cloudiness caused by algae and the detached blue paint visible at the pool’s bottom. Trump suggested that harmful chemicals similar to those used previously on the National Mall might have been used in the pool. “No different than the chemicals used on the National Mall, they utilized something similar in the Reflecting Pool to undermine our beautiful work,” he posted on Truth Social.
Recently, large numbers “86 47” appeared in discolored grass on the National Mall. Authorities suggested these numbers might pose a threat to Trump, the 47th president. The number “86” is often slang for “getting rid of.” Investigations are underway. Trump’s assertions followed days of scrutiny regarding the pool’s condition. He invested over $14 million in its renovation for the America 250 celebrations, intending to replace the pool’s green waters with “American flag blue.” Despite this, algae blooms returned the water to a greenish hue. Federal workers have since applied chemicals to address the algae. However, chunks of paint have peeled away, exposing the rocky foundation of the pool.
