Democratic Insiders Criticize NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Two well-known Democrats with strong ties to the Clinton and Obama administrations have openly criticized New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Their critique focuses on two key issues of Mamdani’s tenure: his economic policies and his stance on Israel.

Former Clinton adviser Mark Penn voiced concerns over Mamdani’s proposed property tax plan. He claimed the plan inaccurately expanded beyond Mamdani’s stated targets. According to Penn, the city’s valuation system miscategorized nearly one million properties instead of the intended 30,000 luxury properties. This misclassification, he argued, burdens homeowners to prove their properties should not be taxed.

Penn suggested that this tax plan could negatively impact property values and investment in New York City. He also hinted at potential constitutional challenges. Penn shared his views in a detailed post on X.

Rahm Emanuel, former Obama White House chief of staff, also critiqued Mamdani during an appearance on the Unholy Podcast. He recounted a private 90-minute discussion with Mamdani, where he addressed Mamdani’s statements on Israel. Emanuel supported some of Mamdani’s domestic policies but objected to Mamdani’s use of the term “from the river to the sea.” Emanuel stressed that such rhetoric could contribute to ongoing conflict.

Mamdani’s communications director, Anna Bahr, disputed Emanuel’s account of the meeting in a post on X. She did not clarify whether she disputed the meeting itself or Emanuel’s interpretation of the conversation.

Beyond the specific criticisms of Mamdani, Emanuel also critiqued the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) more broadly. On X, he emphasized the importance of focusing on competitive elections. Emanuel argued that efforts should prioritize winning seats and combating political corruption rather than embracing what he termed as ideological distractions.
