The event appeared set for Sinner to secure the career Grand Slam. However, in an unexpected turn during the second round on Thursday, Sinner experienced one of tennis’s most surprising upsets.
After initially dominating No. 56-ranked Juan Manuel Cerúndolo and winning the first two sets, Sinner lost momentum. He succumbed to defeat with a final score of 3-6, 2-6, 7-5, 6-1, 6-1. Sinner lost three sets back to back, resulting in a dramatic loss. This match not only ended his advancement in Roland-Garros but also broke his steady 30-match winning streak traced back to February.
Sinner’s struggles included coping with warm 84-degree temperatures during the match. His discomfort became apparent during the third set as he battled cramps and requested medical assistance while serving. Following this, Sinner lost 18 of the subsequent 20 games, prematurely ending his campaign to complete the Grand Slam.
Initially, Sinner was positioned as the live betting favorite with odds at -100000 after his two-set lead. Yet, Cerúndolo overcame these odds and secured victory. Looking ahead, Cerúndolo will continue to the third round on Saturday, facing either Martín Landaluce or Vít Kopřiva.
