President Emmanuel Macron of France welcomed U.S. President Donald Trump during the G7 summit in Evian-les-Bains, France. The summit assembled leaders of major industrialized nations with a full agenda on the first full day.
The discussions focused on resolving Russia’s war in Ukraine and addressing the Middle East crisis. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy attended at France’s invitation. U.S. President Trump announced an agreement ending a 3.5-month-long U.S. conflict with Iran. This issue had recently overshadowed the ongoing war in Ukraine, begun by Russian President Vladimir Putin over four years ago.
During a meeting with Macron, Trump expressed intentions to shift attention back to Ukraine. Macron aimed to persuade Trump to continue supporting Ukraine and pressuring Russia toward a peace agreement. Before the summit began, Russia launched attacks on Ukraine’s major cities, killing 11 and damaging a religious site.
Tuesday’s discussions also targeted Middle East stability, with leaders from Egypt, Qatar, and the UAE joining the talks. Despite recent military actions, Trump maintained that diplomatic efforts between Washington and Moscow were ongoing.
Macron emphasized negotiations involving Ukraine, Russia, Europe, and the U.S. Trump, campaigning for the presidency, had professed the ability to end the Russia-Ukraine war swiftly, although achieving this has proven complex. Ukraine commenced European Union membership talks, pursuing political reforms and seeking security guarantees post-war. NATO membership remains contentious due to ongoing conflict.
Trump faced disagreement with European leaders over his unilateral Iran war decision. Tensions emerged with Macron, UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. These tensions included potential repercussions like reducing U.S. troops in NATO member countries. Nonetheless, participants aimed for constructive dialogue at Evian.
Trump expressed optimism about developments in the Middle East, anticipating falling oil prices and a rising stock market. Ahead of the summit, leaders of France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, along with Canada, issued a joint congratulatory statement for the diplomatic breakthrough concerning Iran. They emphasized prompt actions to reopen the Strait of Hormuz to tanker traffic.
Macron announced Western nations’ readiness to quickly assist in peacefully reopening the strait. France and Britain promoted restoring maritime security in the region. Meanwhile, Trump minimized the need for large military deployments, suggesting a limited presence as sufficient.
In addition to engaging with Zelenskyy in a working session, Trump planned further meetings with Qatar’s emir and the UAE president. The day would conclude with a cultural event and a dinner with other G7 leaders. The G7 consists of France, the U.S., Canada, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the UK, with guests Brazil, India, Kenya, and South Korea participating in discussions as partner nations.
