President Donald Trump has confirmed that the U.S. Southern Command conducted a military operation resulting in the death of Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores. Known as “Niño Guerrero,” Flores was the alleged leader of Tren de Aragua, a criminal group originating in Venezuela.
Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, labeling the operation as a “swift and lethal kinetic strike.” He described Tren de Aragua as one of the most dangerous terrorist organizations globally. Trump stated that the action aligns with his campaign promise to target transnational criminal groups and deliver justice for their victims, referencing high-profile cases like the murder of Laken Reilly.
The military strike was completed with assistance from Venezuelan authorities. Newsweek attempted to contact the Pentagon for further details.
Key Points
The statement connected the operation to the administration’s broader policies on border security and immigration enforcement. These policies aim to dismantle criminal cartels and gangs across the Americas.
Trump criticized former President Joe Biden’s border policies, suggesting they allowed “Illegal Criminals” to harm Americans. He claimed Tren de Aragua no longer has a safe haven in Venezuela and pledged ongoing actions against the group.
The announcement included an unclassified video. The footage shows a green-roofed building being struck by an object, followed by flames and smoke.
Legal Actions
The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York had indicted Guerrero Flores on charges leading a transnational racketeering enterprise. Prosecutors accused him of engaging in drug trafficking, firearms offenses, extortion, and violence.
Tren de Aragua is accused of collaborating with narcotics networks to move cocaine from South America to the United States. Authorities claim the group used smuggling routes through Central America and Mexico and maintained operational control via violence and corruption.
U.S. Attorney Jay Clayton remarked, “As alleged, Hector Rusthenford Guerrero Flores has been the mastermind behind Tren de Aragua’s transformation into a transnational terrorist organization responsible for numerous crimes globally.”
Clayton emphasized that over 30 members or affiliates of Tren de Aragua have been charged with federal crimes. The focus remains on dismantling these cartels that threaten public safety through drugs, violence, and corruption.
