Green Mill Celebrates 40 Years Under Dave Jemilo’s Ownership

2 weeks ago 0

The Green Mill, a legendary tavern and nightclub located near the corner of Lawrence and Broadway in Chicago, is set to celebrate 40 years of ownership under Dave Jemilo next Friday night, June 19. Although Jemilo no longer owns it, he has entrusted the Green Mill to Jason Cole and Jill Skintges, who he considers like family.

Jemilo reflected on his decision to pass the torch, mentioning, “This place has been my life for more than 40 years; it was time. There is other stuff in life I’d like to do.” Cole and Skintges have been integral to the Green Mill’s operations for decades, with Cole serving as a bartender/manager and Skintges working as a waitress and bartender, alongside a career in dance and teaching.

The prospect of new ownership initially caused concern among patrons. Jemilo had bought adjacent retail spaces for $5 million in 2021, prompting speculation. Jemilo stated, “There were a lot of interested parties, but Jason and Jill made the most sense.” The new owners assure patrons of their commitment to preserving Jemilo’s legacy.

Operating a tavern is challenging, and Cole and Skintges spent months planning their purchase, with aid from silent partners. Jemilo joked about these partners, “Some you’ve been throwing out for years.” The Green Mill’s history is rich, from its origins in 1907 to its associations with Al Capone. Jemilo first bought it in 1986, transforming it into a renowned jazz venue.

Van Smith, a poetry slam pioneer, praised Jemilo’s influence: “Dave helped many of us shape our lives and careers.” Joannie Pallatto echoed this sentiment, saying Jemilo’s devotion to music made the venue extraordinary.

Alongside its vibrant history, the Green Mill is known for its no-frills approach: cash-only transactions, no talking during shows, and no drink menu. Jemilo booked diverse musical acts and nurtured emerging talents.

As Jemilo steps back, he plans to venture on a road trip to Alaska from his Wisconsin farm. He leaves behind a legacy intertwined with the Green Mill. Despite retirement, his connection to the tavern remains strong, symbolized by a tattoo of the venue’s iconic statue.
