President Donald Trump’s influence within the Republican Party undergoes another examination in South Carolina as the state’s gubernatorial primary moves towards a crucial runoff.
In the primary, Trump-backed Lt. Gov. Pamela Evette secured a place in the runoff, contending against South Carolina Attorney General Alan Wilson. This development follows Trump’s earlier setbacks in other GOP primaries. The competition is to succeed the term-limited Governor Henry McMaster.
According to the Associated Press, Evette and Wilson will meet in a two-week runoff. Neither candidate was anticipated to surpass the 50% threshold needed for outright nomination. Winning the runoff could almost guarantee success in the general election within the predominantly Republican state.
The power of Trump’s endorsement has been visible in other states over the past month, yet it faced challenges in recent primaries.
Recently, Trump’s last-minute endorsement of Rep. Randy Feenstra in Iowa’s GOP gubernatorial race, alongside his support for Evette, was insufficient. Feenstra lost narrowly to Zach Lahn, who was backed by MAHA and Turning Point USA.
In South Carolina, candidates emphasized their allegiance to Trump in hopes of securing his backing. Evette received Trump’s endorsement, which he announced while describing her as a committed “America First Patriot.” Her rival, Nancy Mace, had previously advocated for releasing files related to the Jeffrey Epstein case, which she believes influenced Trump’s decision.
Speculation arose when Trump suggested that Evette might choose Henry McMaster Jr. as her running mate. This comment sparked controversy about any potential arrangements, which both Evette and Gov. McMaster denied. Eventually, the younger McMaster withdrew himself from consideration for the position.
The Republican nominee will likely have an advantage in the November general election, given South Carolina’s conservative leaning. Competing Democratic candidates include State Rep. Jermaine Johnson and others with political experience.
