CNN Defends Use of Anonymous Sources in Iran War Reporting

CNN has defended its reporting following Retired Brig. Gen. Mark Kimmitt’s criticism during a recent interview about the network’s use of anonymous sources regarding the Iran war. Kimmitt challenged CNN’s reports involving negotiations and Joint Chiefs Chairman Gen. Dan Caine, questioning their accuracy.

A CNN spokesperson told Fox News Digital, “We stand by our reporting.” Joseph Holstead, a public affairs adviser to the Joint Chiefs of Staff, did not comment on CNN’s report or Kimmitt’s views. Yet, he agreed with Fox News Digital’s assessment that CNN’s sources lacked firsthand knowledge of the conversations.

Kimmitt pointed out inconsistencies by highlighting CNN’s earlier claims that negotiations were not taking place. President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance later confirmed that discussions with Iran were happening. Trump personally stated his involvement on Thursday, and Vance mentioned efforts on Saturday to restore oil and gas traffic through the Strait of Hormuz.

RNC spokesperson Natalie Baldassarre supported Trump’s approach, presenting it as effective and popular. “President Trump’s ‘Peace through Strength’ foreign policy has prevented Iran from developing a nuclear weapon,” she said.

CNN did not answer Fox News Digital’s questions about vetting its anonymous sources or Kimmitt’s claims. CNN’s Friday article described that Gen. Caine had privately expressed doubts about achieving Trump’s objectives with airpower alone. Caine was seeking alternatives to escalating the conflict, a notion supported by three unnamed sources.

The article included a response from Caine’s spokesman, Joseph Holstead, who refused anonymous characterizations of Caine’s private discussions and declined to reveal the content of Caine’s conversations with Trump and other officials.

Kimmitt criticized CNN further, observing the U.S. was not meeting its objectives concerning Iran’s nuclear, missile programs, and regional proxy support. These issues, he noted, are ongoing, such as the situation in the Strait of Hormuz. Kimmitt also highlighted the broader strategic context, including considerations regarding China, Ukraine, and military resources.

CNN anchor Omar Jimenez expressed a shared preference for named sources, echoing Kimmitt’s sentiments.

As negotiations to reopen the Strait of Hormuz proceeded, Fox News Digital noted that U.S. Central Command paused strikes against Iranian targets. Fox News Digital attempted to contact Kimmitt for further comments without success.
