Chicago White Sox Triumph Over Cleveland Guardians After Rain Delay

The Chicago White Sox faced the Cleveland Guardians in an unpredictable game at Rate Field after heavy rain delayed play by 2 hours and 23 minutes on Sunday. Following the delay, both teams relied on their bullpens to complete the match.

As the game continued, the White Sox called in their 2024 first-round draft pick, Hagen Smith, to pitch. Reflecting on his major-league debut, Smith remarked, It was definitely different. I didn’t really know I was going in until about an hour into the delay, then they said I was going in and it sounded good to me. So I just went from there. Smith threw two scoreless innings, striking out three and walking four, earning the win in the Sox’s 5-3 victory in front of 31,263 fans.

Colson Montgomery’s performance was pivotal, hitting a decisive three-run home run during a key four-run third inning.

With this series victory, the White Sox (61-56) hold a 3.5 game lead over the Detroit Tigers (58-60) in the American League Central. The Guardians and Minnesota Twins are both four games back.

The Sox surpassed their previous season’s total wins (60-102), marking progress. Manager Will Venable noted the team’s improvement, expressing satisfaction with surpassing last season’s performance. Obviously, we have a long way to go here. But certainly happy about where we’re at now knowing that, yeah, we’ve gone through some stuff here and have continued to push through and just get better and better. And obviously getting our 61st win today and surpassing last year is evidence of that, Venable said.

The game became a bullpen affair, offering Smith a first taste of Major League Baseball. The White Sox had recently called up Smith and Tanner McDougal from Triple-A Charlotte, while sending Noah Schultz and David Sandlin to Charlotte and designating Wikelman González for assignment.

Once the game resumed, after an inning with minimal action, Smith entered with the Sox trailing 2-1. The Sox managed to tie, then seize the lead in the third inning thanks to Montgomery’s home run.

Chicago’s bullpen held the lead, with relievers Sean Newcomb, Huascar Brazobán, Bryan Hudson, Jordan Hicks, and Trevor Richards contributing key innings. Richards secured his first save of the season, concluding a challenging 13-game stretch against teams like the New York Yankees, Tampa Bay Rays, and Boston Red Sox with a 6-7 record.

Montgomery emphasized the importance of these games for the team’s future, stating, These games are big games, not just for now, but later into September. So getting two games (in the series) was big.
