RNC Warns Against Socialist Influence in Democratic Party

The Republican National Committee (RNC) national spokesperson, Natalie Baldassarre, issued a warning on Sunday. She claimed that socialists are leading Democrats towards a political downfall. This statement followed an incident where Megan Romer, co-chair of the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA), struggled to specify a tax rate for millionaires on ‘The New Yorker Radio Hour.’

Baldassarre stated, ‘The Democrat Party is being led off a cliff by socialists who are arguing while driving blindfolded. Unless Democrats stop, every candidate on the ballot will face questions over socialist beliefs that might ruin our country and take away safety and freedom.’

During her interview with David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker, Romer supported high taxes on the wealthy. She expressed more concern for billionaires, whom she accused of acquiring their wealth by exploiting workers. Romer failed to provide specific details regarding tax rates or thresholds when questioned.

I think most billionaires gained their wealth by significantly exploiting the working class, Romer said. The bigger issue is exploitation, not setting arbitrary limits on wealth. But we support taxing millionaires heavily, absolutely.

Romer’s inability to state a firm tax policy drew criticism from Remnick, who interrupted her for more clarity. Romer explained that the DSA planned to base tax policies on government spending needs. This approach would establish a tax base to support spending priorities.

The DSA’s 2026 program, formed through its 2025 convention, also lacks a specific tax rate for individuals and corporations targeted by wealth taxes. The program advocates aggressive taxes on the wealthy to fund public infrastructure and goods.

Recently, candidates backed by the DSA have won major Democratic primary victories. Melat Kiros defeated Rep. Diana DeGette in Colorado, while Darializa Avila Chevalier won against Rep. Adriano Espaillat in New York. In Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed narrowly beat Rep. Haley Stevens in the Democratic Senate primary.

Romer differentiated El-Sayed from DSA candidates since he identifies as a capitalist. Meanwhile, the centrist Democratic group Third Way announced a $15 million campaign through 2028 to combat the DSA’s influence.

Matt Bennett, Third Way co-founder, argued that the DSA poses a threat to Democrats with dangerous ideas and toxic politics. He emphasized the need to prevent radicals from defining the Democratic Party to compete against MAGA Republicans.

Romer dismissed the planned campaign as a waste of money, stating, ‘We believe in people power, and our vision for a better future is winning.’
