The Detroit Red Wings were close to entering the NHL playoffs last season for the first time since 2016, but ultimately fell short. Now, the team faces another challenge as reports emerge about their captain, Dylan Larkin, seeking a trade. Larkin, a Detroit native and key player for the team, has expressed his desire to leave, citing the ongoing playoff drought and tension with GM Steve Yzerman.
Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman reported that Larkin, 29, is looking for a move to a different team. Neither Larkin, his representative, nor Yzerman have confirmed these claims as of now. Friedman’s report relies on information from multiple sources.
Larkin, who was selected 15th overall in the 2014 NHL Entry Draft, has been a standout player for the Red Wings. He has accumulated 643 points over 808 games. According to Puck Pedia, Larkin carries an $8.7 million cap hit and remains under contract until 2031. This makes him an appealing prospect for other NHL teams.
In addition to his contributions to the Red Wings, Larkin has been active internationally. He played for Team USA in the Four Nations Face-off and was part of their gold-medal-winning team at the recent Olympics.
Despite his no-trade clause, any potential trade will need Larkin’s approval over the next two seasons. For the Red Wings, trading Larkin could bring in significant assets. While it is not an ideal situation, it might offer the team a chance to restructure and aim for future postseason success.
