In a horrific event, four immigrant workers in southern Italy were burned to death, highlighting severe labor abuse issues involving criminal trafficking networks.
Authorities in Calabria reported that these immigrants, employed as fruit pickers, fell victim to a brutal act of violence on Monday. Surveillance cameras captured two individuals setting a van on fire and blocking the exits, leaving the workers trapped inside.
The incident has prompted widespread outrage in Italy, leading to calls for action at the national level. Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni has made public statements condemning the violence and calling for justice for the victims.
The sole survivor, Mohammad Taj Alamyar, who is from Afghanistan, recounted the event to investigators. He and his fellow workers, also from Afghanistan and Pakistan, had been laboring in strawberry fields. Alamyar said they faced this attack after confronting their employers about withheld wages.
Alamyar identified the perpetrators as Pakistani drug traffickers linked to Italian organized crime. Despite his injuries, including bandaged hands and one hand in a sling, Alamyar escaped the burning van by fleeing through an open rear door.
Prime Minister Meloni emphasized the need for thorough investigations. She stated in a social media post that Italy must remain unyielding against such acts of violence and ensure those responsible face justice.
