World Cup Opener Sees Rare Red Card Surge

The World Cup’s opening match in Mexico City showcased an unusual situation in international soccer. Three players received red cards, marking a rare occurrence. This hasn’t happened since a 2006 game between Portugal and the Netherlands, when four players were sent off, setting a World Cup record. In contrast, the entire 2022 World Cup in Qatar only witnessed four red cards.

The event took place at the Azteca Stadium, where Sphephelo Sithole and Themba Zwane from South Africa were ejected alongside César Montes from the tournament co-host, Mexico. This marks the first instance of three players being dismissed with straight red cards in an opening match. None of these players had received two yellow cards first, highlighting the severity of their actions. The match concluded with Mexico securing a 2-0 victory.

Sithole was shown the red card for a challenge on Brian Gutierrez at the edge of the box early in the second half. Zwane’s offense followed in the 84th minute after a video review revealed he struck Roberto Alvarado in the face. In stoppage time, Montes was penalized for tripping Khuliso Mudau.

All three players face suspensions and will miss at least one subsequent game. South Africa is set to play the Czech Republic next, while Mexico will encounter South Korea in Guadalajara.

The match between Portugal and the Netherlands in 2006, known for its record four red cards and 16 yellow cards, remains a notable comparison.
