Johnny Depp is returning to the spotlight with his portrayal of Ebenezer Scrooge in the upcoming film “Ebenezer.” The release of the movie’s trailer on Thursday sparked diverse reactions. While many fans praised Depp’s performance, the tagline “Think you know his story? Think again” left some viewers confused.

One user commented, “From the trailer, it’s still the same story. It’s like Scrooge and Muppets Christmas Carol. No need to think again; it’s familiar.” Another asked, “Why is the tagline suggesting a revisionist story when the trailer faithfully follows Dickens?”

Depp appears as Scrooge in “Ebenezer,” a role that has been portrayed many times. Despite questions about the film’s marketing, many fans are excited to see Depp’s version, with one sharing, “So many have done this story, and I still will watch it.”

This film marks Depp’s first major studio appearance in years. His last big screen role was in the 2023 French historical drama “Jeanne du Barry.” He also directed “Modi: Three Days on the Wing of Madness.” Depp is set to star alongside Penélope Cruz in the thriller “Day Drinker.”

Fans see these projects as a strong return for Depp. One user celebrated, “This looks so awesome, I’m glad Johnny Depp is back in action.” Another added, “Depp is back at the top of his game!”

Depp began acting with “A Nightmare on Elm Street” in 1984, becoming famous as Tom Hanson in “21 Jump Street.” His career took off with “Edward Scissorhands” in 1990. His role as Jack Sparrow in “Pirates of the Caribbean” brought blockbuster success and his first Oscar nomination. He earned two more nominations for “Finding Neverland” and “Sweeney Todd,” winning a Golden Globe for the latter.

In recent years, Depp faced challenges. His career downturn followed legal issues including a defamation trial with his ex-wife Amber Heard. In 2020, he lost a U.K. libel case over an article calling him a “wife beater.” In 2022, a jury found Heard liable for defamation in a Virginia trial.
