Jack Murphy’s Resurgence in High School Football

Lincoln-Way East is celebrating the return of Jack Murphy, a junior receiver known for his speed and agility. Murphy recently overcame a hamstring injury that slowed him down and has gradually rejoined the team’s lineup. “I was out a little longer because they wanted to ensure I could finish the rest of the regular season,” Murphy explained. “And the playoffs.”

Game Night Performance

Murphy’s third game back was a showcase of his talent. He caught eight passes for 186 yards, scoring two touchdowns in the first half, leading Lincoln-Way East to a 42-0 win against Lincoln Way Central in New Lenox. This marked the first football encounter between these district rivals since spring 2021.

Quarterback Evan LeFevour contributed with 240 passing yards, while backup Tyler Spychalski connected with Luke Ingram for a 61-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. Aidan Cavanaugh added 51 rushing yards and two touchdowns. On defense, Ontario Pryor intercepted a pass, and Jacob Onik and Cameren Stewart achieved pivotal sacks.

Highlighting Murphy’s Skills

Murphy impressed with touchdown catches of 66 and 44 yards, transforming short passes into long runs. “He’s great,” said LeFevour about Murphy. “He’s very good at gaining yards after the catch. We see it in practice, and now it’s better with him back on the field.” Senior offensive lineman Mason Halliman praised Murphy as “the best in the state.”

Despite previous injury constraints, Murphy entered Friday’s game with modest stats, four receptions totaling 51 yards, with a longest catch of 25 yards. The team showcases another quick receiver, Jayden Cawthon, creating a formidable offensive pair.

“Jack is one of the faster kids in the state and qualified for state in track sprints,” said coach Rob Zvonar, emphasizing Murphy’s return from injury. “Having Jack alleviates a lot of pressure off Jayden. Instead of worrying about one guy, now opponents have to watch out for two.”

Murphy’s Foundation in Speed Training

Murphy attributes his sprinting abilities to early training. “My dad (Mike) started me on speed training in sixth grade, and I’ve been engaged ever since,” he shared. “It’s been a significant aspect of my life. He researches extensively and selects the best program for me.” Aside from his speed, Murphy acknowledges the offensive line’s physicality. “I appreciate seeing the big guys advance and disrupt opponents,” he said, expressing gratitude.

Lincoln-Way East’s Dominant Season

After close victories against Brother Rice and Kankakee, Lincoln-Way East remains undefeated, decisively winning their next five conference games with a combined score of 122-31. Positioned as one of the state’s leading teams, they aim for the first Class 8A title since 2019.

Murphy, young during their last title win, recalls watching that championship team. “I used to watch AJ Henning play,” he mentioned Henning, who advanced to play college football and is now associated with the Miami Dolphins. “After witnessing the championship, I grew interested in football, and my father taught me the basics.”

Now deeply passionate about football, Murphy describes the sport as central to his life, providing peace and balance despite its aggressive nature. “It’s my life,” Murphy affirmed. “It’s everything I know. It’s a compelling way to maintain tranquility.”
