William Shatner’s Health Scare and His Daughter’s Cancer Battle

William Shatner recently shared a health crisis that nearly went unnoticed. At 95, the actor revealed how an initial dismissal of a lump by a doctor led to a shocking discovery. Shatner’s first doctor believed the lump was a salivary gland issue and suggested a simple massage. He discussed this experience on ‘CBS Mornings.’

Critical Second Opinion

Shatner’s concerns led him to seek a second opinion from a doctor friend. This friend advised prompt action, saying, ‘You better get this out.’ This advice saved Shatner’s life; he was diagnosed with stage 4 malignant melanoma. An oncologist urged immediate surgery, given how far the cancer had spread.

Shatner described how the melanoma had already affected vital organs. ‘It had spread to my brain. There were small points of light in my brain and likely in my lung,’ he said.

After surgery, Shatner underwent two years of immunotherapy. Meanwhile, his daughter Melanie Shatner Gretsch faced her own health challenge.

Melanie’s Battle with Cancer

Before Shatner’s diagnosis, Melanie discovered a lump in her breast. A prior mammogram had shown nothing unusual, but she insisted on further testing. She was later diagnosed with HER2-positive breast cancer, which had spread to her lymph nodes.

Melanie described how she initially thought she was cancer-free but pushed for another evaluation. She discovered the cancer was more aggressive than expected.

Her treatment was extensive, involving chemotherapy, radiation, a double mastectomy, and immunotherapy.

Father and Daughter’s Triumph

During her treatment, Melanie reached out to her father during a difficult moment, seeking comfort and support. By the end of 2024, both Shatner and his daughter were declared cancer-free. Sharing this news marked a significant emotional milestone for them.

Despite his health scare, Shatner did not slow down. Known as the oldest person to travel to space via a Blue Origin rocket, he continues to pursue creative projects, including books, a podcast, and music.
