Wildfires in Europe: A Growing Crisis

In a tragic incident near Athens, Greece, two firefighting helicopters collided midair while combating a wildfire, leading to one helicopter crashing. Footage captured the moment the two aircraft, each manned by a crew of two, collided. The Greek Fire Department reported that two crew members were safely recovered, while the other two were found unconscious, with no further updates on their health status.

This incident highlights the severe danger posed by wildfires across Europe. Strong winds fueled the blaze west of Athens, prompting evacuations. France and Spain also faced significant wildfires, with France witnessing flames over an area four times the size of Paris. Meanwhile, major fires in Spain have halted in their advancement.

Wildfire Operations in Greece

Firefighters from the Hellenic Civil Protection faced daunting challenges battling the flames near Agios Nektarios in Western Attica. The helicopters, identified as Bell models, were operating over the Psatha area west of Athens. Each helicopter carried a two-person crew, consisting of Greek and foreign nationals. The authorities have not released the nationalities of the foreign crew members.

The fast-spreading fire threatened communities and an industrial zone outside Megara. Strong winds prevented firefighting aircraft from collecting water from the sea. This region was previously hit by the deadly 2018 Mati wildfire, which resulted in 104 deaths.

Continued Fire Threats Across Europe

The wildfire situation remained perilous as France contained its largest wildfire within a defined perimeter. However, the scar left by the fire covered an enormous area of 420 square kilometers, disrupting the lives of thousands of evacuees.

In Spain, wildfires forced mass evacuations. This year alone, catastrophic fires have displaced nearly a third of a million people across the continent, emphasizing the growing threat of wildfires fueled by climate change. The European Environment Agency reports that wildfires have been linked to nearly 800 deaths in Europe over the past four decades.

Europe’s temperatures have risen more than twice the global average since the 1980s. Scientists from World Weather Attribution have attributed the extreme fire conditions in France this year to human-caused climate change.

Efforts to Tackle the Fires

In Greece, nearly 500 firefighters and 23 aircraft attempted to combat the flames, but strong winds hampered their efforts. Evacuations were ordered in areas such as Kandili, Agia Skepi, and Toutouli, with concerns growing for Porto Germeno on the Gulf of Corinth. The fire began near Agios Vasileios and rapidly spread, leading to the evacuation of people by sea.

Meanwhile, fires also threatened homes on Kefalonia island, leading to further evacuations. Earlier, two firefighters lost their lives fighting a blaze on Crete, with another fatality in the Peloponnese.

“A pristine forest, a paradise, was surrendered to the hands of the fire,” stated local farmer Minas Tzortzanis.

France’s Ongoing Battle

In southwestern France, the Gironde megafire has been held but continues to burn within its perimeter. The fire has scorched 420 square kilometers, and the region remains under red alert for forest fires. Local temperatures and winds threaten to reignite the flames.

Provence faces a separate challenge with the Gros Bessillon fire, which was stabilized after affecting 18 square kilometers. Some 2,500 people were evacuated as firefighters worked tirelessly to contain the situation.

Spain’s Situation Under Control

In Spain, fire threats have eased. The Fermoselle fire near the Portuguese border is now guarded by ground and aerial units, with many evacuees returning home.

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez called for a national strategy to confront wildfires, acknowledging the increasing destructiveness caused by climate change.
