White Nationalist Group Stages March in Washington Amid Celebrations

A large group of masked members of the white nationalist organization, Patriot Front, marched through Washington, D.C., on Saturday. Their presence contrasted sharply with the festive atmosphere as massive crowds gathered to celebrate the United States’ 250th anniversary.

According to videos and photographs shared on social media, dozens of men marched in formation near Union Station and other city areas. The marchers donned navy-blue shirts, khaki pants, tan baseball caps, sunglasses, and white cloth face coverings. They carried both American and Confederate flags, along with various banners.

The demonstration unfolded against the backdrop of extensive Independence Day celebrations. These festivities, marking America’s semiquincentennial, attracted hundreds of thousands to Washington for military displays, parades, concerts, and a record-setting fireworks show on the National Mall.

In an email to Newsweek, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) confirmed their tracking of First Amendment activities in the Eastern Market neighborhood. “MPD recognizes the rights of individuals to peacefully express their views and remains committed to maintaining public safety and security for DC residents and visitors,” stated a department spokesperson. No arrests were made during the event, according to the MPD.

Understanding Patriot Front

Patriot Front is classified by civil rights organizations and extremism researchers as a white supremacist and neo-fascist group. The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) describes the group as promoting the ideology that America belongs solely to descendants of European settlers.

The group is noted for its highly organized flash demonstrations, often held without prior announcement. Patriot Front advocates for nonviolent disobedience, with members occupying public spaces to promote what they term “patriotic politics” while opposing anti-national messaging.

Formed in late 2017 after a split from the neo-fascist group Vanguard America, Patriot Front emerged in the wake of the deadly “Unite the Right” rally in Charlottesville, Virginia, where a counterprotester was killed. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) currently tracks Patriot Front as one of the most active white nationalist organizations in the U.S., driven by its propaganda and flash marches.

Internal documents obtained by USA Today indicated that Patriot Front has over 540 members across every state except Hawaii, as of early 2026. An analysis of the Texas-based group’s member roster and other documents showed that more than half of its members joined within the past two years. The group maintains close ties to various Active Clubs, a network combining white supremacy with mixed martial arts in fight clubs across the nation.

Patriot Front’s founder, Thomas Ryan Rousseau, recently called on members to stay physically fit and continue spreading white supremacist propaganda. In a message obtained by the newspaper, Rousseau expressed the group’s ambition to enlist 600 members by July 4 in line with the nation’s milestone anniversary.

This is a picked band of dedicated men that far exceeds any of our domestic contemporaries,” Rousseau wrote. “These teams need dedicated members. Men willing to work for the cause and not just fight for it.”

Patriot Front did not respond to Newsweek’s request for comment, and efforts to contact Rousseau were unsuccessful.

Historical Context in Washington

Saturday’s march is part of a recurring pattern of demonstrations by the group in Washington, D.C., and surrounding areas. Patriot Front members have historically integrated into major events in the capital, such as the annual March for Life.

In May 2023, approximately 150 members marched through downtown Washington carrying shields, flags, and banners. More recently, in May, dozens held a similar unannounced march in Virginia Beach, drawing criticism from local officials and residents.

On Saturday, the group continued its procession under the watchful eyes of local law enforcement before dispersing, even as holiday crowds filled the downtown area.
