Chicago Bears Eye Potential Move to Indiana: A Look at the Developments

As the Chicago Bears prepare for their 2026 home opener against the Minnesota Vikings, fans are buzzing with excitement and curiosity. The game marks the beginning of their 55th season at Soldier Field, a venue steeped in tradition. However, Hammond, Indiana is emerging as a potential new home for the Bears.

Plans in Motion for a New Stadium

In June, the Bears announced plans to explore stadium development in Hammond, Indiana. Unlike past discussions in the late 1990s, current talks appear serious. Hammond Mayor Thomas McDermott Jr. highlighted how the city has prepared for this possibility but admitted he never envisioned becoming the new home of the Bears.

“We have done a lot in Hammond and Indiana to prepare,” McDermott stated in a recent interview. “I’d be lying if I said I thought we’d be the future home of the Chicago Bears.”

Site Selection and Community Efforts

The Bears have investigated two potential sites in Hammond: the Lost Marsh and Lake Terminal sites. These locations became viable thanks to significant clean-up efforts and land aggregation.

“When I first took over, it was unlikely the Bears would consider it,” said McDermott. “But we assembled around 300 acres and began transforming the area.”

While land development was crucial, property tax caps in Indiana are also attractive to the Bears. Reduced taxes create a more appealing financial landscape compared to Illinois.

Infrastructure and Economic Growth

Hammond’s infrastructure supports large projects due to its industrial base and proximity to Lake Michigan. McDermott noted that Hammond’s established utilities and transport networks are advantages. Indiana House Speaker Todd Huston emphasized the project’s potential to boost economic growth across generations.

Hammond’s position near major highways and rail networks is beneficial, although road improvements are needed. The deal includes substantial funding for enhancing infrastructure.

Bipartisan Cooperation

McDermott praised the bipartisan efforts surrounding the Bears discussions. Federal, state, and local leaders, regardless of political affiliation, have rallied together. Indiana Gov. Mike Braun has played a crucial role, providing leadership from an opposing political party to Hammond’s administration.

Past Attempts and Current Prospects

Previous attempts to move the Bears to Indiana didn’t materialize. Despite skepticism, current negotiations have progressed. McDermott describes the team as being close to a decision, akin to being “in the red zone” ready to score a touchdown.

The Future of the Chicago Bears

The Bears have assured they will remain the “Chicago Bears” regardless of relocation. McDermott emphasized Northwest Indiana’s allegiance to the Bears over local sports teams, notably the Indianapolis Colts.

Negotiations continue, with the Bears’ chairman George McCaskey and President Kevin Warren holding the reins. Both parties remain hopeful for favorable outcomes.
