Virginia Democrats Highlight War in Iran as Key Election Issue

7 minutes ago 0

On Monday, Democrats in Henrico County, Virginia, gathered to discuss the impact of the war in Iran on upcoming elections. Former representatives Elaine Luria and Tom Perriello, along with others, stressed the conflict’s importance beyond oil price implications.

The war’s effect on oil markets has challenged Republicans in the midterms. In Virginia, a state with strong military ties, implications extend to military deployments.

“This war … is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties,” stated Elaine Luria, a former representative, during the rally outside Richmond.

Luria is campaigning against Jen Kiggans, another Navy veteran, in Virginia’s 2nd District, which includes Virginia Beach and several key Navy bases.

Shannon Taylor, Henrico prosecutor, is running against Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District. Taylor criticizes Wittman’s support for the war. Tom Perriello, aiming to reclaim the 5th District seat from Rep. John McGuire, cited ending the war as a priority.

Joining them, Pete Buttigieg, former transportation secretary and a military veteran, aimed to rally support for Virginia Democrats. Buttigieg, a potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, encouraged the crowd of over 200 to push for a House majority.

“The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” Buttigieg said to the attendees, who waved signs for the candidates.
