Virginia Democrats Address Iran War as Election Issue

25 minutes ago 0

On Monday, three Virginia Democrats united at a rally in Henrico County. They focused on the ongoing war in Iran, highlighting its implications beyond rising gas prices.

This unpopular conflict has affected oil markets and posed challenges for Republicans during the midterm elections. Virginia, a state with significant military ties, feels the effects more acutely.

“This war … is sending our sailors overseas under an administration that’s lying about the number of casualties,” said Elaine Luria, a former representative challenging Rep. Jen Kiggans in Virginia’s 2nd District. The district is centered in Virginia Beach, home to key Navy installations.

Shannon Taylor, a prosecutor from Henrico, is running against Rep. Rob Wittman in the 1st District. She too criticized her opponent’s support for the war. Former representative Tom Perriello, aiming to reclaim his seat by challenging Rep. John McGuire in the 5th District, echoed the need to end the war.

Pete Buttigieg, former transportation secretary and potential 2028 Democratic presidential candidate, supported the Democrats’ message at the rally. “The road to that majority runs right through here, and it depends on you,” he told more than 200 attendees holding signs for all three candidates. His presence underscored the importance of gaining control of the House, with Democrats needing a net gain of four seats for a majority.
