Hundreds of veterans are joining a national clinical trial to explore semaglutide’s role—found in diabetes and weight-loss medications like Ozempic—in treating alcohol addiction. The Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) announced this new initiative to address a key health issue in the veteran community. Over 400,000 veterans in the U.S. are diagnosed with alcohol use disorder (AUD), according to VA data.
The trial, known as the Cessation or Reduction of Alcohol Consumption in Veterans, is gaining attention for its focus on GLP-1 receptor agonists’ potential impact on addictive behaviors. These medications influence blood sugar, appetite, and brain reward pathways.
“This clinical trial reflects medical research that VA is uniquely situated to launch, and is aimed directly at benefitting Veterans,” VA Secretary Doug Collins stated. “By exploring emerging treatment options like the use of a GLP-1 for AUD, we aim to expand the tools available to help Veterans take control of their health and recovery.”
Trial Operations
The trial aims to enroll over 600 veterans across 18 VA medical centers nationwide. It is a critical evaluation designed to verify treatment efficacy with specific patient groups, ensuring safety and monitoring side effects.
Trial Details:
- Participant Criteria: Individuals aged 18 to 80, diagnosed with moderate or severe AUD, are eligible.
- Evaluation Metrics: Participants will receive weekly injections of semaglutide or a placebo over 24 weeks, followed by safety monitoring.
- Timeline: Recruitment began on July 28, tracking drinking habits, health, and quality of life changes to assess if the medication serves as a viable treatment.
Veterans interested in participation can contact their local VA medical center or search for the trial on ClinicalTrials.gov. An observational study of veterans with Type 2 diabetes prompted the trial, showing lower substance use disorder rates among those on GLP-1 medications. Reduced emergency visits and hospitalizations were also noted. However, associations didn’t establish causation, hence the need for this controlled trial.
The VA advises against self-medicating with GLP-1 drugs and recommends consulting healthcare providers before changing treatment plans.

Understanding AUD and Its Impact on Veterans
AUD, commonly known as alcoholism, hinders the ability to manage drinking despite adverse impacts. The disorder varies from mild to severe. According to a VA-cited national study, 40.8% of veterans met AUD diagnostic criteria, while over 10.5% experienced it recently. Rates vary with age, often higher among younger veterans.
Alcohol issues often coincide with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other mental health challenges. Veterans with PTSD are twice as likely to face alcohol problems compared to those without PTSD, per the VA’s National Center for PTSD.
Veterans with both probable AUD and PTSD encounter higher risks of depression, anxiety, and suicidal tendencies than those with AUD alone. The VA notes treatment can address both conditions simultaneously through therapy, medication, or combined approaches.
