President Donald Trump announced that two strong earthquakes in Venezuela resulted in numerous deaths. Officials are assessing the damage from the disaster.
Venezuela’s interim President, Delcy Rodríguez, reported at least 32 fatalities and over 700 injuries. These are the first official numbers of casualties. The earthquakes struck Venezuela on Wednesday, causing extensive damage, particularly in Caracas. Rescue workers were seen clearing debris.
In a statement, Trump called the earthquakes ‘massive’ and mentioned the widespread devastation. He expressed that the United States was ready to provide assistance.
The U.S.A. stands ready, willing, and able to help! Trump said. I have instructed all government agencies to prepare for rapid response. We will be there for our new and great friends.
Trump noted that early reports from Venezuela were unfavorable.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the first earthquake, with a magnitude of 7.2, occurred at 6:04 p.m. ET. Its epicenter was located about 15 miles east-northeast of San Felipe. A second quake of magnitude 7.5 hit 39 seconds later, with its epicenter about 14 miles southeast of Yumare.
The USGS issued a red alert, indicating a likelihood of high casualties and widespread damage.
Rodríguez declared a state of emergency following the earthquakes. Nearly two dozen aftershocks followed the initial tremors. In a televised message, Rodríguez called for calm and unity among Venezuelans.
We urge our population to remain calm, Rodríguez stated. We urge unity.
On Thursday, Rodríguez confirmed 32 deaths and more than 700 injuries. U.S. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau shared that American officials were coordinating with Venezuelan authorities to provide aid.
The State Department’s Bureau of Western Hemisphere Affairs is closely monitoring the situation. They expressed condolences and committed to support Venezuela during this crisis.
