USC Suspends Linebacker Desman Stephens

USC Trojans’ linebacker Desman Stephens is suspended for one game due to a late hit on Oregon Ducks quarterback Dante Moore. This incident occurred during the second quarter of the Ducks’ 41-20 victory over the Trojans.

Moore scrambled and was poised to slide after securing ample yardage for a first down when Stephens launched a direct hit targeting Moore’s head. Despite his ejection from the game for targeting, Stephens’ immediate reaction included celebration and interaction from Moore’s teammates.

“Desman’s actions in last night’s game are unacceptable and are not reflective of USC Football nor of his personal character,” USC head coach Lincoln Riley stated. “He understands his mistake, accepts the consequences of his actions, and will learn from this.”

Moore was stretchered off the field following the incident, with USC expressing hopes for Moore’s full recovery and extending their best wishes to him and his family.

Reaction to the Incident

Oregon head coach Dan Lanning expressed strong disapproval of the hit, labeling it as “disgusting.” Stephens, expressing regret and apologizing for his actions, acknowledged the seriousness of the player’s injury and his inappropriate conduct post-collision.

In a statement, Stephens shared, “I want to sincerely apologize for my actions during yesterday’s game. Seeing a player injured like that is incredibly serious, and my reaction in the moments afterward was completely inappropriate and inexcusable. Regardless of what was going through my mind at the time, there is no justification for smiling or celebrating while another player receives medical attention. I am deeply sorry to Dante, his family, and everyone who saw my reaction.”

Stephens is scheduled to miss the upcoming game against Washington.
