US Security Concerns Over Cuba’s Espionage Activities

Secretary of State Marco Rubio has expressed concerns about Cuba’s ability to infiltrate and influence high-level U.S. institutions. He described a dangerous Cuban spy network that poses a threat to American interests.

Rubio spoke on ‘My View with Lara Trump’, pointing out that Cuba is aligned with U.S. adversaries and represents a national security threat. His remarks came after the State Department released a report detailing Cuba’s influence operations in the U.S., connecting the nation to Antifa and radical activism, labeling Cuba as the ‘capital of 21st-century communism’.

Influence and Espionage Activities

Rubio claimed that Cuba is an ‘influence and espionage superpower’. He stated that Cuba has historically embedded spies within U.S. systems without financial incentives. He discussed a convicted U.S. ambassador who was a Cuban spy and noted Cuba’s penetration of the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA).

The case of Manuel Rocha, a former U.S. ambassador, highlighted these concerns. Rocha was sentenced to 15 years in prison for acting as a Cuban secret agent for decades.

Another example is Ana Belén Montes, a DIA analyst who passed American secrets to Cuba, representing a major intelligence failure.

Protests and Influence Networks

Rubio asserted that Cuba employs protest networks across the U.S. to advocate for causes that pressurize lawmakers. He linked pro-Hamas, anti-ICE, and pro-Maduro protests to Cuban-hired networks.

There’s nothing organic about it. It is funded, it is organized, and Cuba is a part of that network and in some cases a critical part of the network.

Rubio warned that these networks can be weaponized against the U.S., with plans openly discussed to pressure American policymakers.

Cuban influence campaigns are also reported throughout Latin America. According to Rubio, left-wing insurgencies in the region have historically received support from Cuban operations.

Critics argue that the State Department’s report is a scare tactic to justify possible U.S. military action against Cuba.

Rubio dismissed those in American academia and press who sympathize with Cuba’s regime, attributing motivations to anti-Americanism and ideological affinity.

Despite sympathetic views, Rubio stressed the importance of not ignoring the threat posed by Cuba’s activities.
