Unsettled Primary Races in California: Key Contests for Governor and Los Angeles Mayor

3 weeks ago 0

As of June 4, 2026, two days after the primary election in California, the results for major positions remain unclear. While millions of votes are still being counted, it’s uncertain who will feature on the November ballot for governor and Los Angeles mayor.

Governor’s Race

Steve Hilton, a Republican and former Fox News host, currently holds a lead in the race for governor with approximately 27% of the counted votes. However, with many votes yet to be tallied, there’s potential for changes in the standings. Xavier Becerra, a Democrat and former cabinet member in the Biden administration, is closely trailing with around 26% of the vote.

Also in the running is Tom Steyer, a Democratic billionaire advocating progressive policies. His final standing will depend on the remaining votes still being processed.

Mayoral Race

Spencer Pratt, running for Los Angeles mayor as a Republican, has shown early promise. Yet, given the number of uncounted ballots and California’s primary system, outcomes remain unpredictable. This system advances the top two candidates, irrespective of party affiliation, to the general election. This could potentially lead to a Democrat versus Republican contest or a race between two Democrats.

The final results will determine who progresses to challenge the current mayor, Karen Bass.

As counting continues, the political landscape is set to evolve, influencing who will stand in the general elections in November.
