Ukraine Deploys Ground Robots in Operation Vivaldi

Ukraine’s military has claimed a significant milestone with the deployment of ground robots behind Russian lines in ‘Operation Vivaldi,’ a key offensive move. The Third Army Corps announced that attack ground robots were used from heavy bomber drones, deep in Russian-held territory, serving as payloads for larger aerial drones. Unmanned ground vehicles (UGVs) are becoming increasingly vital in Ukraine’s combat strategy, filling roles traditionally held by infantry.

Brigadier General Andrii Biletskyi, commander of the Third Army Corps, stated, ‘Our heavy bomber drones deliver suicide ground drones more than 10 kilometers into the enemy’s rear,’ as reported by United 24 Media. Ukrainian outlet RBC Ukraine noted that while air delivery of ground robots is not entirely new for Ukraine, this is the first usage for kamikaze unmanned ground systems over such a distance.

What is Operation Vivaldi?

Biletskyi recently shared insights into Operation Vivaldi, ongoing in the Donetsk oblast, focusing on halting Russian advances north of Lyman to protect the ‘Fortress Belt’ of cities crucial to Kyiv’s defense in the Donbas region. The operation’s second phase included liberating three settlements northwest of Lyman and eliminating 800 Russian troops. UGVs played a key role by targeting the Russian tactical rear, aiding Kyiv’s combined arms operations.

The Third Army Corps described using artillery and unmanned systems to strike targets like command posts, logistics, and reserves. Ukraine’s air defense and electronic warfare provided a protective shield, preventing Russian detection of the operation, according to statements shared on Telegram. The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) mapped out Ukrainian gains, showing the recapture of areas in the Lyman sector, achieving a total liberation of 48 square miles since the operation’s initiation.

Military analyst Giorgi Revishvili remarked on the operation’s effectiveness in maneuver warfare, despite challenges from drones and surveillance. He suggested that although Ukraine’s local successes might not sway Russia’s long-term strategies, they highlight Ukraine’s operational planning capabilities.

Retired Australian Army Major General Mick Ryan commented on whether Operation Vivaldi will expand current efforts or consolidate achievements, noting this as a crucial question for future battlefield developments.
