Shifting Political Allegiances Among Arab Americans

1 hour ago 0

The current midterm election cycle highlights a shift in political allegiances among Arab Americans. This shift is influenced by rhetoric from political figures, particularly from the MAGA faction of the Republican Party.

The rise in Islamophobic and anti-Arab sentiments from some Republican leaders has become a significant talking point. This includes comments made by Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. during a Michigan campaign event. Kennedy’s remarks questioning Arab contributions to science and literature ignore the accomplishments of individuals such as the Syrian poet Adonis and the Jordanian chemist Dr. Omar Yaghi, both recognized for their significant contributions.

President Donald Trump has also been criticized for his comments regarding Abdul El-Sayed, Michigan’s Democratic Senate candidate. Trump’s accusations against El-Sayed involve inflammatory language, labeling him as a ‘jihadist’ and ‘terrorist’, which has drawn condemnation even from within his party.

The effect of such rhetoric is a notable shift among Arab-American voters. According to a Washington Post-Schar School poll, many Arab Americans are moving away from the Republican Party. This includes those who previously supported Trump in 2024, with a significant number now expressing support for Democratic candidates.

In Michigan, a state with a large Arab-American population, this shift is particularly impactful. Rep. Mike Rogers, a Republican, trails behind El-Sayed, and the absence of support from Arab-American voters may prove detrimental to his campaign.

The Democratic Party’s openness to Arab Americans stands in contrast to recent rhetoric from some Republicans. Many Arab Americans, feeling alienated by their previous political affiliations, are finding resonance with the Democratic Party’s stance.
