The U.S. men’s national soccer team confidently defeated Paraguay 4-1 in their World Cup opening match at SoFi Stadium, Inglewood, California. Displaying dominance from the start, they capitalized on an own goal by Paraguayan midfielder Damián Bobadilla just seven minutes into the game.

Star striker Folarin Balogun further extended the lead to 2-0 with a goal past Paraguayan goalkeeper Orlando Gill in the 31st minute. As the first half approached its end, Balogun showcased skill again with a powerful strike, scoring his second goal.

Paraguay’s midfielder Mauricio scored in the 73rd minute, attempting a comeback. However, winger Gio Reyna sealed the victory with a remarkable goal in the second-half stoppage time. This victory places the U.S. at the top of Group D, where Australia and Turkey are also competing. Their next match against Australia is set for June 19 in Seattle.

The U.S. performance contrasted with their previous World Cup outing in Qatar, where they only managed to score three goals in four matches. Under the guidance of coach Mauricio Pochettino, the U.S. displayed more creativity and vibrancy, thrilling a crowd of 70,492 fans.

Balogun, who chose to represent the U.S. over England, delivered a spectacular World Cup debut with the first U.S. multigoal performance in the tournament since 1930. Christian Pulisic, who contributed to the first two goals, was substituted at halftime, causing some concern about an injury. However, he indicated to family that he was alright. Pulisic’s runs down the left side were pivotal in creating scoring opportunities, including an own-goal situation triggered by his pass to Weston McKennie.

Though Pulisic’s absence in the second half altered the team’s dynamics, Reyna managed to score a celebratory goal, marking his first World Cup achievement. This moment was particularly significant as Reyna had limited playtime in the previous World Cup due to team issues.

The match witnessed the attendance of numerous American celebrities, with figures such as Tom Cruise and Leonardo DiCaprio cheering from the stands.
