Trump Targets GOP Critics, Backs Allies in Texas Showdown

4 weeks ago 0

In Austin, Texas, Donald Trump has shifted his focus this week and is now targeting Republican critics like longtime GOP Senator John Cornyn of Texas. Trump called Cornyn “very disloyal” as he backs Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton, a staunch Trump ally, in the heated GOP Senate nomination runoff. This race further tests Trump’s strong influence in the Republican Party as well as the power of his endorsements.

The winner of the runoff will challenge Democratic state Representative James Talarico in a significant election. This race could determine if Republicans maintain their slim 53-47 Senate majority. Talarico defeated progressive opponent Jasmine Crockett in the March primary and aims to be the first Democrat to win a Texas Senate seat in nearly four decades.

The Senate race is the most notable event on a ballot filled with other runoffs, including those for the Texas Attorney General and four U.S. House seats. Notably, there’s a Democratic runoff in the 35th Congressional District, where one candidate controversially suggested using an ICE detention center to imprison American supporters of Israel.

“Ken is a true MAGA Warrior who has always delivered for Texas,” Trump said in a social media post endorsing Paxton. Trump’s backing came after a period of neutrality in the race.

During an interview with Fox News, Cornyn stressed his support for Trump and his policies, despite Trump’s previous criticisms. Paxton, however, argued Cornyn opposed Trump on key issues like the border wall.

The Texas race sees Cornyn facing off against Paxton, who has a history of legal troubles and scandals. Despite being impeached by the Texas House in 2023, Paxton was acquitted by the state senate. The current runoff adds another layer to his ongoing controversies, such as a messy divorce filed on “biblical grounds.”

Cornyn’s supporters include Senate Majority Leader John Thune and the National Republican Senatorial Committee. He argues that a Paxton nomination would force Republicans to spend heavily to retain the seat. Cornyn also pointed to the fundraising prowess of opponent Talarico, warning of a “tsunami” of Democratic funds if Paxton wins the nomination.

Amid these high-stakes races, other notable runoffs include the Texas Attorney General showdown, where Chip Roy competes against Mayes Middleton. Despite a self-funded campaign by Middleton, Roy highlights his experience and backing from major supporters. Both candidates position themselves as pro-Trump, but highlight their differences to sway voters.

In the Congressional District 35 Democratic runoff, activist Maureen Galindo sparked controversy with her extreme proposals, drawing criticism and bolstering support for opponent Johnny Garcia.

Additionally, Alex Mealer, endorsed by Trump, faces Briscoe Cain in the 9th Congressional District, a politically leaning-right area in Houston. The outcomes of these elections could influence the overall composition and strategy of the Republican Party in Texas.
