President Donald Trump has strongly criticized The New York Times for its reporting on the ongoing conflict with Iran, labeling it as ‘treasonous.’ He expressed his intention to include the report in his lawsuit against the newspaper. On his Truth Social platform, Trump condemned the Times for using ‘fake and made-up facts’ in its coverage, which he described as ‘treasonous.’
Trump has a history of conflicts with reporters and media outlets since his return to office. He previously filed a $15 billion defamation lawsuit against the Times in September last year, which was dismissed by a judge. The complaint was described as ‘tedious and burdensome.’ The amended 40-page complaint, filed in October in the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Florida, names multiple defendants from the newspaper.
Trump’s criticism came after he disputed a Times analysis suggesting the prolonged conflict had minimal strategic impact. While the Times conveyed skepticism, Trump maintained that Iran’s military and economy had suffered significantly. He listed several areas of damage including military losses, high inflation, and economic struggles.
The Times has maintained that Trump’s lawsuit lacks merit and aims to suppress independent journalism. Trump further criticized an article with the headline ‘What Changed After Almost 4 Months of War? Analysts Say Not Much,’ asserting Iran’s military and economic conditions as evidence of change. He highlighted various supposed successes on social media, rebuking the Times for its analysis.
Newsweek reached out to attorneys representing Trump and the New York Times for comments. Trump has previously settled lawsuits with ABC News and CBS News’ 60 Minutes. He also pursued legal action against The Wall Street Journal and its owner Rupert Murdoch over stories related to his connections with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
