Trump Congratulates Colombian Presidential Candidate Abelardo De La Espriella

1 day ago 0

Donald Trump has extended his congratulations to Abelardo De La Espriella, a prominent conservative figure in Colombia, following an early ballot count in the presidential election. Although the results are not yet official, De La Espriella’s narrow lead suggests a shift to the right in Colombia’s political landscape.

De La Espriella, referred to as ‘El Tigre,’ holds a slight lead over left-wing Senator Ivan Cepeda, with 99.9% of the vote counted. De La Espriella garnered 49.7% of the vote compared to Cepeda’s 48.7%. He was particularly successful in the mountainous interior and Antioquia, a state with significant voting power. Conversely, Cepeda performed well in Bogotá and coastal areas.

Cepeda has raised concerns about electoral irregularities at thousands of polling stations. Though overturning an election is rare in Colombia’s history, Cepeda’s challenge is noteworthy.

If De La Espriella’s lead stands, it would echo a broader trend in South America, where countries like Chile, Ecuador, Bolivia, and Peru have recently seen conservative leaders gain power.

“He called me last night, and he thanked me for the endorsement. He won. He won the election,” Trump stated at a White House signing event. Trump indicated that future U.S.-Colombia relations would improve under De La Espriella’s leadership.

The Colombian election was marked by stark differences between the candidates. De La Espriella, supported by Trump’s endorsement, emphasized a hardline approach to law and order, promising aggressive measures against criminal groups. Meanwhile, Cepeda advocated for negotiations, continuing the strategy of his ally Gustavo Petro.

Ivan Cepeda has a long history in Colombian politics, having served as a senator for over a decade and previously working in the Chamber of Representatives. His father was a significant figure in the Colombian Communist Party.

The first round of the election, held on May 31, saw De La Espriella receive 43.7% of votes, compared to Cepeda’s 40.9%. Right-wing Senator Paloma Valencia finished third with 6.9%. Following the results, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio expressed eager anticipation for collaboration between the Trump administration and De La Espriella’s prospective government.

Despite differing political contexts, De La Espriella’s campaign mirrored Trump’s in several ways. Neither candidate had held prior public office, and both ran campaigns largely independent of established political structures. Security was a pivotal issue for De La Espriella, who criticized Petro’s negotiation-based policies, suggesting they allowed groups like ELN and FARC to strengthen.

De La Espriella committed to using military forces to reclaim territories from cartels and terrorist organizations, planning to construct “mega-prisons”, inspired by policies seen in El Salvador. He intends to pursue free-market strategies, reduce governmental intervention, and lower taxes.

A De La Espriella presidency is expected to rejuvenate U.S.-Colombia relations, which suffered under Petro due to tensions with Trump. Colombia was once viewed as the U.S.’ strongest ally in the region.

Analysts will be observing Colombia’s stance towards Venezuela, with expectations that De La Espriella will align closely with Trump’s policies, constraining Venezuela’s new administration while urging action against guerrilla groups.
