Trump Administration Plans Major Visa Revocation for Asylum Seekers

The Trump administration is reportedly preparing to revoke business and tourist visas from approximately 200,000 foreigners who applied for asylum in the United States. The State Department is expected to announce this action in the coming weeks, according to internal documents and two U.S. officials cited by The Associated Press.

This policy would target B1 and B2 visas issued between 2016 and 2026 to individuals who later sought asylum. If implemented, the action would represent the largest mass visa revocation in U.S. history. Legal challenges may arise concerning this decision.

A State Department representative stated that they are working with the Department of Homeland Security to identify and revoke the nonimmigrant visas of those who entered the U.S. as short-term visitors but later filed for asylum, seeking permanent residency. The exact number of affected individuals remains uncertain as revocations would occur on a “rolling basis.”

The revocation would not result in immediate deportations. Foreign nationals with pending asylum applications would generally be reclassified and lose their tourist or business visitor status. Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau emphasized that asylum should not be misused to sidestep immigration laws.

B1 visas typically serve business travelers, while B2 visas are issued for tourism, family visits, and medical purposes. Visa applicants must demonstrate intentions to return to their home countries.

This development comes within the context of the Trump administration’s broader effort to address perceived abuses of the immigration system. The State Department has already revoked around 175,000 visas in the past 18 months.

The potential revocation is part of a larger crackdown on the immigration system by the administration. This action follows other measures aimed at curbing immigration abuses.
