Trump Accuses Ilhan Omar of Using Fraudulent Name, Sparks Controversy

2 hours ago 0

U.S. President Donald Trump has publicly declared that Democrats have “conceded” the congressional seat of Representative Ilhan Omar. This claim follows federal court documents that named Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi,” a name Omar strongly denies.

In a court filing observed by Newsweek, prosecutors referred to Omar as “Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” Omar responded via a post on X, asserting, “My name has always been Ilhan Omar.”

During a speech in Fort Myers, Florida, Trump insisted that due to allegedly using a false name when taking her congressional oath, Omar’s seat was conceded by the Democratic Party. He remarked on the Democratic Party conceding to a “fake name used to be sworn in.” However, no formal concession by Democrats has been announced, and Omar remains in office.

Trump has previously urged Omar to resign, echoing unproven claims that she married her brother. He reiterated these accusations, claiming Republican gain from a “fraudulent” seat concession.

House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries criticized Trump’s attacks, calling them “unhinged personal attacks and baseless accusations.” He expressed support for Omar’s work in Congress, emphasizing the party’s opposition to what he called the weaponization of the federal government against her.

Trump’s comments during the Florida rally, where he suggested Democrats have surrendered Omar’s seat, followed previous claims about her name. On Truth Social, he alleged that Omar’s real name is not the one she used to be elected.

Omar’s Response to Allegations

Omar’s office firmly denied Trump’s recent claims. A spokesperson for Omar stated to Fox News Digital, “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name.”

Following the DOJ’s Wednesday filing, Omar criticized what she characterized as the president’s laundering of conspiracy theories. She questioned focus on her name instead of Vice President JD Vance’s multiple name changes.

Omar addressed the marriage allegations on MS NOW with Chris Hayes, denying any knowledge of being related to Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, noting fabricated stories from conspiracy theorists.

Elmi, who was married to Omar from 2009 to 2017, is noted as a researcher and academic affiliate with various institutions. Newsweek has provided details on Elmi’s background.

Investigation Raises Further Scrutiny

The tensions between Trump and Omar, the first Somali-born U.S. legislator, continue, with Trump frequently targeting her heritage. Recently, a Homeland Security raid at Omar’s Washington residence, related to a federal criminal investigation, reignited the controversy.

Although Trump claims no involvement in the raid, Omar asserts it is politically motivated. She accuses Trump of influential ties to the investigation amidst his ongoing deportation demands.

Jeffries condemned the DHS raid as politically motivated, criticizing Trump for spreading propaganda amid rising political violence. He reiterated Democratic support for Omar under increasing pressure.
