Dodgers Acquire Tarik Skubal: Impact on MLB Landscape

The Los Angeles Dodgers have made headlines by acquiring Tarik Skubal from the Detroit Tigers. The transaction sees the back-to-back American Cy Young winner move to the team of the two-time defending World Series champions. In exchange, the Tigers receive three prospects: outfielder Zyhir Hope and right-hand relievers Brady Smith and River Ryan.

ESPN first broke the news late Saturday. The trade sends Skubal to Los Angeles for Hope, who MLB currently ranks as the No. 25 prospect in baseball.

Skubal underwent arthroscopic elbow surgery in May, sidelining him after seven starts for Detroit. The 29-year-old pitcher missed six months before returning in mid-June. As a starter, Skubal has a 7-5 record this season. While he is owed the remainder of his $32 million salary, he will not be eligible for a qualifying offer from the Dodgers due to the timing of the trade.

The Dodgers have been favorites to win a third-straight World Series title this fall. However, many fans of other teams are frustrated by the trade. The Dodgers managed to obtain Skubal for three prospects, a deal competing teams could have potentially matched.

Detroit fans find the move bewildering as the Tigers are only 2.5 games out of an American League Wild Card spot. Conversely, the Dodgers hold a 10-game lead in the National League West with a record of 69-42.

Skubal made his last start for Detroit on July 29. He is expected to debut for Los Angeles during a series against the Chicago Cubs starting Monday.
