Truck Driver Schools Under Investigation for Fraudulent Licenses

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS), alongside the Department of Transportation (DOT), is actively investigating truck driver schools. This joint probe targets schools involved in issuing fraudulent certifications and records. The focus is primarily on cases where commercial driver’s licenses (CDLs) were improperly given to non-citizens.

Freedom Haulers Initiative Launched

In a new development, President Donald Trump has introduced the Freedom Haulers initiative. This program, aimed at military veterans, opens pathways to enter the commercial truck driving industry. Trump’s administration is intensifying efforts to remove illegal immigrant and non-English-speaking truckers from American highways. Anna Kelly, a spokesperson from the White House, commented, “The Freedom Haulers initiative facilitates veterans obtaining CDLs post-service.”

In conjunction with this, Trump is partnering with officials across various departments, including the DOT, Veterans Affairs, and Labor, to bolster the trucking industry. This will aid veterans’ transition to civilian life with good-paying trucker jobs.

Expanding CDL Eligibility for Veterans

The DOT plans to lengthen the waiver period for obtaining CDLs for veterans from 12 to 24 months after active-duty service. This change aims to accommodate those who have not operated heavy commercial vehicles during their military service by providing dedicated CDL training.

States like Indiana and Wyoming are set to join the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration’s Even Exchange program, easing the process for military truck drivers to convert their experience into civilian CDLs. Werner Enterprises will announce employing 1,400 new veteran drivers.

Crackdown on Non-compliant Truck Drivers

The administration continues a stringent approach against truck drivers who lack English proficiency or possess improperly obtained licenses. The DOT reports having revoked more than 24,000 licenses due to language proficiency issues. Additionally, over 28,000 licenses issued to non-citizen drivers have been rescinded.

Impact on Road Safety and Supply Chains

This initiative aims to enhance road safety and strengthen the trucking workforce. The announcement follows several deadly accidents involving illegal immigrant drivers in states like Florida and California. Such incidents underscore the urgency of these policy changes.

Furthermore, statistics from the DOT reveal a 7.42% rise in truck drivers’ real wages during the Trump administration. In comparison, there was a 3% decline during President Biden’s term. DOT data also indicates lower accident rates and higher mileage by veteran truck drivers compared to non-veterans.
