A young man, aged 20, died after falling from a 177-foot waterfall at Silver Falls State Park in Oregon. Park officials called it a ‘horrific accident’.
According to reports, the man was from another state and visiting the park located over an hour south of Portland. He attempted to take a photo at a dangerous spot near the waterfall by going off-trail and crossing a barrier, walking over a creek above the falls.
The accident happened at the upper viewpoint of South Falls, the park’s highest waterfall. It plunges into a large pool below. The incident took place around 6:30 p.m., and bystanders tried to assist by performing CPR until emergency teams arrived. The victim was pronounced dead on the scene.
Authorities, including the Marion County Medical Examiner and Marion County Search and Rescue, handled the recovery. Unger Funeral Chapel later took custody of his body. The man’s identity remains undisclosed.
Silver Falls State Park is renowned for the Trail of Ten Falls, attracting hikers with its ten waterfalls. South Falls is a highlight, allowing visitors a unique view from behind the waterfall. The park is known as the ‘crown jewel’ of Oregon’s state parks.
