Governor Mikie Sherrill aimed to replace federal agents with state police to calm tensions in Newark. The situation, however, did not improve.
As night fell at the Delaney Hall immigration detention center, clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement frequently erupted. Protesters gathered to voice concerns about conditions inside the facility.
For nearly a week, demonstrators outside the detention center had confrontations with federal agents. These agents responded with pepper balls and spray, as witnessed and captured in videos. Newark’s tensions risked mirroring Minneapolis, where previous immigration protests resulted in federal officers killing two people. Seeking to avoid this outcome, Governor Sherrill deployed the state police to maintain order near Delaney Hall.
Despite these efforts, unrest continued. Protesters pushed against barricades and started fires, while state troopers, both on foot and horseback, moved against the crowd. These volatile encounters present challenging optics for police forces across the nation, including in cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, and New York. In these places, local authorities prohibit police from supporting federal civil immigration enforcement. However, officers are tasked with preventing trespassing, traffic disruption, and vandalism, which can lead to perceptions of collaboration with federal agents.
Now, New Jersey officials find themselves entangled in this ongoing crisis. Earlier this week, after taking control of security outside Delaney Hall, Newark Mayor Ras Baraka announced on Thursday he would step back the city’s response. He had reached a point of exasperation with the unresolved conflict.
The protests at Delaney Hall began when the facility reopened as a 1,000-bed detention center over a year ago. Managed by GEO Group, a major private prison company, most demonstrations in the last five months remained peaceful. Despite this, recent events have caused significant disruptions and attracted substantial concern from officials and local residents alike.
