LA ALTAGRACIA, Dominican Republic — Following a devastating fire at a prominent resort, Dominican Republic officials are assisting foreign tourists in their efforts to return home. The blaze occurred at the Viva Dominicus Beach by Wyndham resort in Bayahibe, widely visited by U.S. and international travelers on the nation’s southeastern coast.

The fire prompted evacuation of close to 1,700 tourists and led to the death of an Italian national. Many evacuees are dealing with the loss of vital identity documents, such as passports. Amanda Santana, a hotel representative, confirmed coordination efforts with embassies and governments to aid guests in navigating entry requirements.

Hotel officials are collaborating with police to enable online filing of needed reports for guests. Relocation arrangements are in place, with many tourists now situated in hotels in Punta Cana and Bayahibe.

General Manuel Méndez, head of the Emergency Operations Center, announced an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the Italian woman’s death. Despite the incident, tourism in the vicinity continues as usual.

The resort was filled to 84% capacity at the fire’s onset. Authorities indicated that the fast spread of the fire was influenced by wind and the thatch roof structure.
