Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District Race Highlights Trump’s Influence

Tennessee’s 5th Congressional District primary race tests the political power of former President Donald Trump. Voters will decide between Trump-endorsed Rep. Andy Ogles and Charlie Hatcher, who recently received support from Governor Bill Lee.

Rep. Andy Ogles, seeking his third term, has become a notable figure with Trump’s backing. His endorsements also include House Speaker Mike Johnson and Jim Jordan, reinforcing his conservative stance. The district, part of the Nashville suburbs, strongly favored Trump in the 2024 presidential election, where he led by 18 points over Vice President Kamala Harris.

“The golden endorsement that anyone wants is that of President Trump’s, which I have,” Ogles remarked. He believes these endorsements underscore his position as a conservative leader.

However, Ogles faces a challenging race. A super PAC, Invest in Tomorrow Coalition, has invested over $1.3 million to support Hatcher. Chris Larsen, a notable donor to the PAC, had previously supported Harris’ campaign efforts.

Despite these challenges, Ogles has retained a significant role in Congress. He serves as a liaison between Johnson and the conservative House Freedom Caucus. Johnson praised Ogles’ contributions, stating, “Andy Ogles is one of the members who’s a small handful of guys who helps deliver the vote.”

Conversely, Charlie Hatcher, former Agriculture Commissioner, touts his conservative values. Gov. Lee has stood by Hatcher, highlighting their 25-year friendship and shared ideals. Hatcher promises sensible solutions and aims to support Trump’s agenda in Congress.

The district has seen such splits before. In 2024, Trump backed Bobby Harshbarger over a Lee-supported candidate, leading to a victory for Harshbarger.

The outcome of this primary may provide insight into the enduring influence of Trump’s endorsements in Tennessee’s political scene.
