Officials Demand Answers on Power Outage Recovery

Local Officials Call for Investigation

Officials are actively seeking answers regarding the mass power outages and recovery efforts undertaken by the Northern Indiana Public Service Company (NIPSCO). U.S. Representative Frank Mrvan has initiated a move to request a Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) investigation into NiSource, NIPSCO’s parent company. This investigation will focus on evaluating restoration efforts and investment plans.

Focus on Accountability and Improvement

Mrvan emphasized the role of FERC in overseeing energy monopolies and interstate commerce. He stated, “We’ll use every leverage on the federal side to ensure a thorough investigation into both successful and unsuccessful aspects of the response, aiming for needed improvements.”

The city of Gary has been significantly impacted by a two-week-long power outage. City officials have created a “Recovery Action Plan” targeting a robust and ongoing recovery response from NIPSCO. Mayor Eddie Melton expressed the city’s resilience and his commitment to pursuing opportunities for improvement.

“We need Gary’s power grid to be as resilient as Gary’s people,” Mayor Eddie Melton declared.

NIPSCO’s Response to the Crisis

NIPSCO acknowledged the severity of the storm, calling it “an unprecedented event causing extraordinary damage” across its service regions. Mobilizing resources from 14 states, NIPSCO is committed to participating in any governmental inquiries related to the incident. Their primary focus remains on restoring services safely and reliably to all affected customers.

Federal and Local Collaborative Efforts

Rep. Mrvan has directed his staff to draft the FERC investigation letter, highlighting aspects such as NiSource’s response, investment strategies, restoration plans, and future plans for vegetation maintenance. He aims to utilize his position on the Energy and Water Subcommittee to advocate for federal-level scrutiny.

Collaboration with state officials, including Governor Mike Braun, and local leaders continues as they collectively seek answers from NIPSCO. Gov. Braun has already requested an investigation by the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, noting the distinct roles of state and federal commissions.

“The Federal Energy Commission oversees those transmitting energy on an interstate-wide system,” Mrvan noted.

Ongoing Support and Recovery Measures

NIPSCO remains in discussions with Gary and other affected community leaders to assess needs and improve storm response strategies. They have temporarily suspended non-payment disconnects and contributed $2 million to support local recovery efforts.

Mayor Melton acknowledged these initial measures as positive but reiterated that further actions are necessary to address the city’s priorities and establish a path toward recovery.

Gary’s Recovery Action Plan focuses on achieving meaningful relief, corporate accountability, and infrastructure enhancements. Long-term grid reliability and improvements in emergency response systems are also prioritized.

“Our path forward requires cooperation involving city officials, contractors, non-profit organizations, local residents, and businesses,” the release stated, emphasizing a collective effort to emerge stronger post-storm.
