Switzerland halted Canada’s World Cup celebrations in Vancouver, edging out a 2-1 victory. Rubén Vargas and Johan Manzambi scored for Switzerland in the win, which secured them the top spot in Group B. Their next match, against one of the third-place finishers, will happen in a week in Vancouver.
“I think that we deserve to be where we are right now,” said Switzerland coach Murat Yakin. “In three days from now, we will know the opponent of the next match, and now we have the possibility to watch this tournament, and to watch the matches, and we will take what we will get.”
Canada, now in second place, will compete in the knockout round for the first time in team history. They had hoped to play their next match at home but will instead travel to Inglewood, California, to face the second-place finisher of Group A on Sunday.
“We wanted to be here in Vancouver, but we still have a massive opportunity ahead of us to find a way to still electrify the nation, even though it’ll be from Los Angeles,” Canada coach Jesse Marsch remarked after the match.

Johan Manzambi, who previously scored two goals as a substitute against Bosnia-Herzegovina, earned a starting position against Canada. His strike followed Vargas’s goal shortly after halftime, bringing Switzerland’s lead to 2-0 in the 57th minute.
Canada responded in the 76th minute when Promise David volleyed a goal shortly after entering the match. Yet, despite several opportunities, Canada was unable to equalize.
Earlier in the match, Switzerland captain Granit Xhaka had a free kick opportunity in the 37th minute but sent it over the net. Canada’s Ali Ahmed had a chance in the 42nd minute, but his shot was saved by Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel.
In their World Cup opener, Canada achieved a remarkable 6-0 win over Qatar, although Ismaël Koné suffered a broken leg during the match. Meanwhile, Switzerland began with a 1-1 draw against Qatar before routing Bosnia in their next game.
“We needed some time to get really into this tournament, for many nations that was the case,” Yakin explained. He expressed satisfaction with Switzerland’s improvement as the tournament progressed.
Canada, in their third World Cup appearance, started with a 2-2 draw against Bosnia. Coach Jesse Marsch credited the team for overcoming injuries and adversity: “We still got a really good point in the first game, we had a fantastic performance against Qatar, and on another day, even though we go down 2-0, maybe we get a goal and maybe we win the group. It was just a matter of fine margins.”
Elsewhere, Bosnia defeated Qatar 3-1, while Qatar has been eliminated from the tournament.
