Arch Manning Poses a Challenge for the SEC

Arch Manning, the quarterback for Texas, is set to become a formidable force in the SEC this fall. He entered the 2025 season with significant hype as a top prospect, comparable to Trevor Lawrence. Manning’s first game against Ohio State was challenging, with 170 passing yards, one touchdown, and one interception, leading to a 14-7 defeat.

Manning began to excel by late October, amassing 346 yards, three touchdowns, and one interception in an overtime victory over Mississippi State. His strong performance in November and Texas’ 41-27 triumph over Michigan in the Citrus Bowl have led some NFL experts to speculate that Manning or Oregon’s Dante Moore could be the leading quarterback in the 2027 NFL Draft.

SEC coaches are concerned about Manning’s potential improvement this season. An SEC defensive coordinator expressed hopes for Manning to have an “off game” against their team. Another believes Manning is better equipped after Texas added talent like wide receiver Cam Coleman through the transfer portal.

“He can absolutely rip it,” the coach remarked, referring to Manning’s throwing power and precision. “Defenses will struggle this year, as both Coleman and (Ryan) Wingo require double coverage.”

In the previous season, Manning achieved 3,163 passing yards, 26 touchdowns, and seven interceptions. He also contributed 399 rushing yards and ten touchdowns.

Besides Coleman, Texas has enhanced its roster by acquiring running back Hollywood Smothers and strengthening the offensive line, addressing key team weaknesses.

With a revamped offense, Manning is expected to be the leading quarterback in the SEC, and Texas is likely a contender for the conference title.
