Dominic Battista’s MLB Draft Experience

Dominic Battista, a graduate from Oswego East, faced uncertainty due to a hamate injury early this season. Despite this, the Illinois-Chicago recruit found himself excited to be considered for the MLB draft.

Reflecting on the process, Battista shared, “It was in the back of my mind.” Initially, being chosen out of high school seemed far-fetched to him. However, on Saturday, his outlook changed significantly. The Kansas City Royals selected him in the fourth round, with Battista chosen 119th overall.

Though Battista has not signed yet, he expressed optimism about proceeding with his professional baseball career. “More than likely I will sign,” he stated, emphasizing his readiness to integrate into the system.

Local MLB Draftees from Aurora-Elgin Area

Battista was among three players drafted from the Aurora-Elgin region. St. Charles North alum Jayden Lobliner joined the St. Louis Cardinals in the ninth round, while Ryan Niedzwiedz from West Aurora landed with the Colorado Rockies in the 15th round.

Battista’s prominence in scouting circles rose over the past two years, fueled by notable performances in showcases and travel tournaments. Following his recovery from injury, he noticed an increasing number of scouts observing his games.

“I feel like that’s something that caught my attention for sure,” Battista remarked. “I was trying to take it for what it was, but I just tried to play baseball honestly.”

Battista transitioned from hosting his graduation party to becoming a professional athlete soon after.

Jayden Lobliner’s Defensive Prowess

Lobliner, who aspired to reach the majors since age five, was recognized for his defensive skills. As the West Coast Conference’s defensive player of the year, Lobliner took pride in his defensive abilities.

“For sure, that’s my thing,” Lobliner stated. “That’s the thing I bring to the ballpark every single day.” He promptly traveled to St. Louis’ spring training facility in Jupiter, Florida, to kickstart his professional career.

“It’s a fast process,” Lobliner said, eager to begin playing professionally and acknowledging it as a significant initial step in his career.

Ryan Niedzwiedz’s Journey to Professional Baseball

Niedzwiedz, through preparation at SIU-Edwardsville, achieved his dream of being drafted. Surrounded by family and friends, he saw his aspirations come to fruition.

He is set to report to Colorado’s spring training in Scottsdale, Arizona, diving into his full-time role in baseball. Niedzwiedz expressed gratitude for the support he received, noting the importance of those who have helped him along the way.

“I’m just the one playing baseball. I appreciate them,” Niedzwiedz said.

Niedzwiedz remains flexible, stating his utility role allows him versatility in utility positions.
