Stroller Running Reduces Risk of Injuries for Parent Runners

1 hour ago 0

Many runners think adding extra weight and resistance during workouts might increase strain on their bodies. However, new research suggests the opposite in certain situations. A study published in PLOS One discovered parents running with a stroller are 58% less likely to experience overuse injuries compared to those who run without one.

The research analyzed survey responses from 255 runners with children aged 0 to 3 years. It found overuse injuries occurred in 19% of stroller runners, contrasting with 30% in those not using strollers. Allison Altman-Singles, an associate professor at Penn State Berks and the study’s senior author, attributed this to changes in body mechanics.

Altman-Singles explained stroller running involves more flexed posture, forward lean, and less vertical force. These biomechanics enable better force distribution through handlebars and feet, potentially reducing overuse injuries. Previous studies indicated stroller running reduces impact loading, which contributes to common running injuries. Pushing on stroller handlebars may shift some force from the legs to the stroller, easing stress on joints and tissues.

Stroller runners reported logging 34% more miles when their children were 6 to 12 months old compared to non-stroller runners. This suggests stroller running aids in maintaining activity during demanding parenting stages. Plantar fasciitis was the most common injury among both groups, with foot injuries being frequent overall.

The study relied on self-reported data, so it cannot definitively prove stroller running prevents injuries. Nonetheless, authors believe the results offer reassurance for parents seeking to stay fit post-childbirth. Altman-Singles advocates stroller running as a safe, practical exercise option during the baby and toddler stages. For those considering it, she suggests a lightweight jogging stroller with adjustable handlebars to maintain elbow comfort. A three-wheeled model with a lockable front wheel and hand brakes adds safety on hills.
