State of Emergency Declared in Washoe County Due to Expanding Hawk Fire

Nevada Governor Joe Lombardo has declared a state of emergency in Washoe County as the Hawk Fire rapidly expands. This fire burns northwest of Reno, near the areas of Verdi and the Somersett community.

Hawk Fire Details

The Hawk Fire was first noted on Saturday, August 22 at 11:23 a.m. near Verdi. By the end of that day, the fire, fueled by strong winds, low humidity, and dry vegetation, had dramatically increased in size to approximately 10,500 acres. Around 400 personnel from various local, state, and federal agencies have been actively combating the flames.

Governor’s Emergency Declaration

Governor Lombardo declared the emergency on Saturday evening as the danger to homes increased. He urged residents to heed evacuation orders and cooperate with local authorities. The state is coordinating closely with local first responders to provide necessary resources for the safety of lives and communities.

Hawk Fire Location

The fire is located in Washoe County, northeast of Verdi and northwest of Reno, near Peavine Mountain and Somersett. Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue reported its movement toward populated areas, prompting expanding evacuation orders throughout Saturday.

Evacuation and Shelter Information

Mandatory evacuations have been initiated for parts of the Somersett community, including zones north of Somersett Parkway to Robb Drive and neighborhoods north of West Seventh Street to North McCarran Boulevard. An evacuation shelter is available at Hall 4 of the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, at 4590 South Virginia Street in Reno.

While a complete count of affected households is unavailable, several communities in northwest Reno, Somersett, Verdi, and adjacent areas are under either “Go Now” or “Get Set” statuses.

Impacts from Neighboring California Fires

In addition to the Hawk Fire, other significant fires in California, such as the nearly contained Bug Fire, have resulted in regional smoke concerns. This fire has consumed over 93,000 acres along the California-Nevada border, impacting resource allocation across the western United States.

Though the California fires are distant, smoke could impact northern Nevada’s air quality depending on wind patterns. Simultaneous fires in both states may strain firefighting efforts and emergency management capabilities.

Ongoing Firefighting Efforts

Firefighters worked through the night to protect property and essential infrastructure. However, anticipated dry and windy conditions may accelerate the fire’s expansion. Residents are advised to follow updates from Truckee Meadows Fire & Rescue, Washoe County Emergency Management, and other Nevada emergency services.
